Project Description
A customer reported that the heating performance of an air-to-air heat pump had gradually declined during the winter season. The outdoor unit became increasingly covered with ice, while the automatic defrost cycles were no longer sufficient to maintain efficient operation. In addition, ice formation and contaminated indoor filters were identified.
Following an initial visual inspection, a comprehensive technical assessment of the complete system was carried out to identify the actual cause of the icing instead of merely removing the visible symptoms.
Initial Situation
- Outdoor unit showing light to heavy ice formation
- Heavy icing of the evaporator coil
- Iced and contaminated indoor air filters
- Reduced heating and cooling performance
- Increased energy consumption
- Extended defrost cycles
- Controller fault indications
Initial Ice Formation
Even minor ice formation can significantly reduce heat transfer. Modern heat pumps therefore initiate automatic defrost cycles to maintain efficient operation.
Light contamination of heat exchangers or air filters can already reduce thermal efficiency considerably. This results in longer operating times, higher electrical consumption and increasing annual operating costs. Routine maintenance is therefore essential for maintaining both energy efficiency and system reliability.
Our Technical Diagnosis – Inspection of Heat Exchangers and Airflow
Before refrigerant circuit measurements are carried out, all heat transfer components and airflow paths are inspected. Dirty heat exchangers, blocked filters or restricted airflow frequently cause significant performance losses and may accelerate ice formation.
Dirty or frozen air filters reduce airflow considerably and may contribute to excessive icing of both the indoor and outdoor units.

🔧 Air Conditioner or Heat Pump Frozen?
Our service engineers support residential, commercial and industrial customers with maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of split air conditioning systems, air-to-air heat pumps and refrigeration equipment.
Whether you operate a residential heat pump, a commercial air conditioning system or industrial refrigeration equipment, we provide professional technical support, structured diagnostics and sustainable maintenance solutions.
Possible Causes of Ice Formation
Ice formation is not always caused by a single component failure. In many cases several factors contribute simultaneously, making a systematic assessment of the complete HVAC system essential for accurate fault diagnosis.
- Dirty air filters
- Restricted airflow
- Contaminated evaporator coil
- Faulty fan motor
- Defective temperature sensors
- Four-way reversing valve malfunction
- Electronic expansion valve failure
- Low refrigerant charge
- Refrigerant leakage
- Electronic control faults
- Defective defrost operation
🛡️ Comprehensive Technical Assessment Instead of Individual Measures
Comprehensive System Diagnostics for Sustainable Solutions
Ice formation is rarely the actual fault. Instead, it is usually a visible symptom of an imbalance somewhere within the refrigeration or heat pump system. Our BIMservice™ methodology focuses on analysing the complete installation, including airflow, heat exchangers, refrigerant circuit, sensors, electronics and system controls.
Evaluating all operating parameters together allows unnecessary repairs, component replacement and secondary damage to be avoided. All inspections are performed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and recognised HVAC and refrigeration engineering standards.
Coolenvi™ supports residential, commercial and industrial customers in Enschede with comprehensive technical diagnostics instead of isolated component replacement.
Testing & Measurement
Verification of refrigerant pressures, temperatures, airflow rates and electrical operating parameters.
Refrigerant Circuit
Leak detection, refrigerant assessment and complete functional testing according to manufacturer specifications.
Documentation
Complete documentation of inspection procedures, measurements and corrective actions.
🚀 Select the Service That Fits Your System
Whether you require emergency assistance or a preventive maintenance agreement, our engineers will recommend the most suitable technical solution for your installation.
🔧 BIMservice™ – Fault Diagnosis & Repair
BIMservice™ has been developed for systems experiencing operational faults. Our objective is to identify the root cause through structured diagnostics, perform a technical assessment and restore reliable operation wherever possible during the initial service visit.
- On-site fault diagnosis
- Inspection of indoor and outdoor units
- Electrical and sensor testing
- Defrost system verification
- Measurement of operating parameters
- Repair recommendations
Prepare Your System Before the Cold Season
Many heating problems only become visible when your air conditioner or air-to-air heat pump is needed most. A preventive inspection before winter helps identify hidden performance losses, airflow problems and technical issues before they lead to unexpected downtime.
Schedule your maintenance early and ensure that your system is ready for reliable heating operation when temperatures drop.
🛡️ BIMcare™ – Preventive Maintenance Agreement
BIMcare™ provides scheduled maintenance programmes that improve reliability, reduce energy consumption and extend the operational life of your HVAC installation.
- Scheduled inspections
- Cleaning of filters and heat exchangers
- Airflow verification
- Defrost function testing
